Filters are about the most important element that you need to pay attention to in your Rigid shop vac. And coincidentally, Rigid shop vac filters are the easiest items to take care of that can ensure effective vacuum service and long life of the machine. And yet people tend to overlook this fact and get themselves frustrated. So please take care of your shop vac filters.
There are three basic Rigid shop vac filters to work with. The VF4000 standard filter is for light duty applications such as basic garage debris. The Microban VF5000 filters will handle medium duty service such as vacuuming heavier dust such as drywall dust from home construction projects and such. And the Microban VF6000 is for much heavier applications as well as pollens, allergens and such particles. Personally, I recommend the use of the Microban VF6000 for almost all applications. The reason for this is that even though this is a slightly more expensive filter, it beats having to have three different kinds of filters in your inventory. Additionally, you do not need to keep changing filter types based upon the service level that you plan to handle from one occasion to the other.
Filters must be kept clean and dry and need to be changed as necessary in order to reduce the load on the motor and for effective vacuuming. People tend to ignore filter change frequencies thinking they are saving money but this is not true. Spending money on replacing filters is a lot cheaper than ruining your entire shop vac and at the same time bad filters will not effectively vacuum up the debris anyway.
